Copperhead Road Logging and Lumber is a third-generation wood business owned by Joe and Jane Jewett. Joe's grandfather, Leo, started out logging and running a sawmill. Joe's father, Raymond, expanded the business into production aspen pulpwood logging. Today, Joe has diversified and in addition to pulpwood sells firewood, hardwood logs, and carving and craft wood. Most of the carving and craft wood comes from hardwood thinnings on Aitkin County public land. The county has achieved SmartWood certification for their sustainable management of the public forest lands.
Joe uses a WoodMizer bandsaw
mill LT40HD for all his sawing. The bandsaw has a narrow kerf, which
wastes very little wood and produces a smooth sawn board. Precision
blade height adjustment allows Joe to produce board thicknesses in 1/8"
increments.
The whole family helps
out with stacking lumber. Jane and Joe handle the boards, and their
two daughters Selket and Sigrid are learning to hand them the "stickers,"
which keep layers of boards separated for air flow.
